Week 3
This week we spent most of the time working on getting our website up and running. This involved designing it both aesthetically and content-wise, as well as writing blog posts. I think our website looks pretty good so far and I’m excited that we're finally able to get it live. I learned a lot more about website design this week, including how to combine fonts, color schemes, and animation
My goals from week one were to 1) learn basic HTML and CSS to create a website, 2) learn more about game design and creation while focusing on accessibility, and 3) form connections with our peers. For my first goal, I think that we’ve done a good job with the time we’ve had and I feel like I do have a basic grasp of HTML. However, we realized that it was pretty unrealistic to make our own website from scratch in just four weeks with no prior experience so we decided to use Wix to help us make our site. This has really helped us make some more progress with our project. My second goal is where I feel I made the most progress this week since we actually started writing game reviews. It’s definitely been a lot of writing, but I’ve enjoyed learning more about different elements of game design and it’s been interesting to consider these while I’m playing. I think that graphics have been especially interesting for me to learn more about since they vary so widely and are such an important and defining part of every game. Like last week, I’ve made good progress with my third goal as I continue to play games with friends and have a lot of fun with that part of the project.
One specific moment that was really fun was playing Phasmaphobia. It’s an indie horror game and we didn’t really know much about it going into it so it was terrifying. However, it was really funny seeing my friends freak out and eventually we got the hang of the game. I think playing more games that I haven’t played before is helping me a lot with realizing what is most useful to include for new players in our reviews. Sophia and I decided that actual video of us playing games to go along with the writing would be really helpful, so we plan to incorporate that more next week. One comment asked how I was learning to code and if I’ll continue with it past this project. We’ve been using mostly YouTube tutorials to teach us and they’ve been a really accessible tool for us that has made coding relatively simple. While I definitely don’t plan on being a computer science major or anything like that, I do plan on continuing to learn just basic code because it can be really useful.
Really great post. Love seeing the website. Well done!! You are definitely the GOATS and you are both definitely hired.
ReplyDeleteGreat job with your website, and learning basic coding off of Youtube tutorials! I was looking at your website, and loved that you included basic information about gaming. It was super helpful that included The Basics of Gaming. The Vocabulary list was helpful, was pretty long, so I wonder if it might not help the reader find a term they need if you alphabetized the list. What other games have you been playing, besides Phasmaphobia and Minecraft? Wendy
